Kaštela stretches for roughly 17 kilometres along Kaštela Bay between Split and Trogir. Its defining feature is not a single centre but seven historic settlements: Kaštel Sućurac, Gomilica, Kambelovac, Lukšić, Stari, Novi and Štafilić, each developed around fortified residences known as kaštela. Vitturi Castle in Kaštel Lukšić now houses the Kaštela Town Museum, and the local story of Miljenko and Dobrila is linked to the Vitturi and Rušinić families. Urban beaches such as Gabine, Đardin, Šumica and Baletna škola line the waterfront, making it easy to mix sightseeing with swimming. Kaštela also has a practical transport advantage: Split Airport lies at the western edge of the city and Kaštel Stari has a railway station. Its position between the UNESCO-listed centres of Split and Trogir makes it a useful base for both, while the seven old centres, castles and long waterfront provide enough substance for a day devoted entirely to Kaštela.
Rather than revolving around one old town, Kaštela unfolds as seven historic settlements between Split and Trogir. Its character grew around fortified seaside residences built by noble families from Split to protect their estates and communities. Exploring Kaštela therefore means following a chain of waterfronts, castles and churches from Sućurac to Štafilić. Mount Kozjak rises behind the coast, while Kaštela Field preserves the story of Crljenak Kaštelanski, the local grape genetically linked to Zinfandel. At the Stomorija Biblical Garden, that relationship between landscape and heritage continues through biblical plants, a small vineyard of native varieties and Vasko Lipovac’s wooden sculpture of Noah’s Ark.

Begin in Kaštel Sućurac, then work west along the waterfront towards the Kaštilac fortress in Kaštel Gomilica and Vitturi Castle in Kaštel Lukšić. Continue through Kaštel Stari and Kaštel Novi, where churches, historic lanes and fortified complexes stand close to the sea. Later, turn inland through Kaštela Field to the Stomorija Biblical Garden. Beside its 1189 church are a stone Way of the Cross, a vineyard containing Crljenak Kaštelanski and a viewpoint across the bay. Strong cyclists can devote another day to the 69.6-kilometre Kaštela Classic road route, which starts in Kaštel Stari and climbs towards Malačka before looping back.
Kaštela’s food combines fish from the bay, produce from Kaštela Field, Dalmatian pašticada and slow-cooked dishes prepared under a peka, with Crljenak Kaštelanski providing the local wine signature. Dining is dispersed across the seven settlements: Spinnaker is at Marina Kaštela in Gomilica, Ino is in Lukšić, while Agava and Konoba Dominik are in Kaštel Novi. For wine, look towards Kaštel Šikuli winery on Put Bijaća or Wine Bar Providenca in Kaštel Gomilica. Choosing a restaurant according to the settlement being visited is particularly sensible here, as these addresses are spread over several kilometres of shoreline and agricultural land rather than clustered around one centre.
The Kaštela Tourist Board welcomes visitors at Cipiko Castle, Obala kralja Tomislava 14/1 in Kaštel Stari, making it a useful place to pick up maps covering all seven settlements. Because the municipality stretches along a long coastal strip, note the precise settlement on every address rather than relying only on the name Kaštela. The local first-aid clinic is listed in Kaštel Stari, as is the duty pharmacy at Vukovarska 1. Emergency services use 112, and the harbour authority maintains a Kaštela branch. Summer planning is easier when beaches, historic cores and practical services are grouped by settlement, since they are distributed across different parts of the city.
Paid public parking in Kaštela is managed by the municipally owned company Zeleno i modro. Its locations are spread across several settlements, including Obala kralja Tomislava in Sućurac, Marina Kaštela in Gomilica, Tikvarin in Kambelovac, Glavice in Lukšić, and the waterfront, bus stop and Kamberovo promenade in Kaštel Stari. In Kaštel Novi, paid areas include Đardin, Kula Ćipiko and Polinovac. The 2026 summer charging period began on 1 June; payment is available at machines, by SMS or through PayDo. A weekly visitor permit is also offered and can be practical when touring several of Kaštela’s separate historic centres by car.
Split Airport lies on the western edge of Kaštela, and Kaštel Stari has a railway station. The city sits on the road corridor between Trogir and Split, making transport connectivity one of its practical advantages.
