Podstrana runs for six kilometres along the coast immediately east of Split, between the mouth of the Žrnovnica River and Veliki Mutogras hill, beneath the southern slopes of Perun. The municipality averages only about 2.5 kilometres from shoreline to mountain ridge, so sea and mountain landscapes constantly overlap. Almost the entire coast is arranged for swimming, while Perun rises above the settlements to Križ at 533 metres and preserves traces of Illyrian, medieval and early Slavic heritage. Cindro Mansion stands in Strožanac, and an approximately two-kilometre promenade follows the Žrnovnica from its mouth towards the quarry. Podstrana is also associated with local interpretations of the Roman commander Lucius Artorius Castus and with a network of place names linked to early Slavic mythology. Split is only about eight kilometres away, making city excursions simple, yet Perun, the Žrnovnica and the long shoreline provide enough distinctive experiences for an active day without leaving Podstrana.
Podstrana is made up of five settlements. The oldest is Gornja Podstrana, set 290 to 340 metres above sea level beneath Perun, while Strožanac, Grljevac, Sveti Martin and Mutogras follow one another along the shore. The history runs deep: the Romans founded the settlement of Pituntium here in the 1st century BC, and the Church of St Martin keeps the tombstone of Lucius Artorius Castus, a Roman commander whom some historians link to the legend of King Arthur. Today the municipality has about 10,000 residents, and its emblem is the peach, a nod to the peach growers who shaped the place. In June 2025 an illuminated PODSTRANA sign was announced for the entrance at Strožanac, with the letter O replaced by a peach and three large palms planted on the island between two roads.

Cindro Mansion in Strožanac is one of Podstrana’s main historic landmarks, while Perun above the settlements preserves medieval chapels, cemeteries and traces of older cultures. Along the Žrnovnica, the landscape shifts from coastal to riverine.
Podstrana’s shoreline is about six kilometres long and is arranged or suitable for swimming along almost its entire length. Beaches continue through Strožanac, Grljevac, Sveti Martin and Mutogras, placing the sea within walking distance of much of the coastal settlement.

A day in Podstrana works best from the river up to the hill. In the morning, the promenade along the left bank of the Žrnovnica leads to Antonica's Mill in neighbouring Žrnovnica; its first stretch, Podstrana walk & bike, opened in late August 2019 and covers 363 metres of seafront path and 1,610 metres along the river. Next comes Perun: the trail from Strožanac to the Church of St George takes about an hour and a half. A circular trail opened in 2017 links Žrnovnica, the old Roman road through the Vilar canyon, St George on Perun and Strožanac beach. More experienced climbers can tackle the Perunika via ferrata, 280 metres long, of medium difficulty and opened in 2018; a harness, helmet and shock absorber are compulsory, and guides come from the agency Iris Adventures and the PD Perun mountaineering society. In the afternoon that leaves the lungomare, six kilometres of mostly pebbled coast from Strožanac to the municipality's south-eastern edge.
Perun offers walking and cycling routes above the sea, with Križ reaching 533 metres. Along the municipality’s western edge, an approximately two-kilometre promenade follows the left bank of the Žrnovnica from its mouth towards the quarry.
Most restaurants stand along the main road and in Gornja Podstrana. The oldest is Arkada at Ulica poljičkih knezova 13, open since 1969, with white fish, pasta with shrimp and dishes with black truffle. In Gornja Podstrana, at Don Petra Cara 205, Konoba Argola focuses on Poljica cooking: veal or octopus is slow-cooked under the peka bell for around two hours, and the menu also has soparnik, a chard and onion pie baked between thin layers of dough. The tourist board also names soparnik as a Poljica speciality, and its list of eateries includes L'Aroma, Leonis and Restoran Perun.
Podstrana lies about seven kilometres from the centre of Split. The Tourist Board has its office at Trg dr. Franje Tuđmana 3, and the post office is at Trg Franje Tuđmana 1. The municipality has Tommy, Konzum, Ribola and Studenac shops, and Strožanac has an exchange office next to Tommy. For emergencies, dial 112 for emergency services, 192 for the police and 1987 for roadside assistance (HAK).
Podstrana is linked with Split and Omiš by Promet Split's line 60, which runs from Split through Strožanac and Podstrana, with a stop by the Le Meridien Lav hotel, to Dugi Rat, Duće and Omiš.
