Kaštel Stari is one of the seven historic settlements forming the City of Kaštela, on Kaštela Bay between Split and Trogir. It takes its name from the fortified residence built on a sea reef by the Trogir nobleman Koriolan Cipico in 1476. A moat and drawbridge once separated the castle from the mainland; after a fire in 1493, it was rebuilt in Renaissance form with an arcaded courtyard and the family coat of arms. A planned settlement grew around it, preserving a distinctive right-angled street pattern. Within that grid stands the 17th-century Church of St Joseph, while the parish church of St John the Baptist contains five marble altars and the body of St Felicius. The local bathing choices include the pebble beaches of Đardin and the First and Second Embankments. A marked mountain path climbs to the 480-metre Malačka pass, while Kaštel Stari railway station and bus links towards Split and Trogir make the settlement accessible without a car. The Kaštela tourist office occupies Villa Nika on Kamberovo šetalište.
Kaštel Stari developed around Cipico’s 1476 castle, a combined residence and defensive structure built on a sea reef. The name Brce, used for the space before the castle, is linked to brvno, the timber drawbridge that once crossed its moat. Following a fire in 1493, the building acquired a Renaissance arcaded courtyard, while the surrounding settlement received defensive walls in 1507. Its right-angled street grid, also recorded on a 1704 plan, remains the clearest feature of the old quarter. The shore of Kaštela Bay and the immediate Kozjak foothills give the settlement both a maritime and a mountain-facing identity.

Đardin is an officially listed pebble beach in Kaštel Stari, positioned beside the waterfront promenade and the historic core. The First and Second Embankments, also classified as pebble beaches, lie within the same settlement. Their urban location makes it easy to combine swimming with a walk to Brce, Cipico’s castle and the Church of St John the Baptist. Unlike more remote coves elsewhere in Kaštela, all three bathing sections belong to the settlement’s continuous shoreline, making them practical for guests staying in Kaštel Stari and for day visitors arriving by public transport.
Start at Brce in front of Cipico’s castle, then follow the old quarter’s right-angled lanes to the Church of St Joseph and the parish church of St John the Baptist. Continue along the waterfront to the pebble shore at Đardin or the First and Second Embankments. For a more active day, take the marked trail to the 480-metre Malačka pass, which overlooks Kaštela Field, Split, Trogir and the central Dalmatian islands. Cyclists can use the 19.7-kilometre Kaštel Stari route, gaining 506 metres and including a sustained gravel climb above the bay.
Kaštel Stari has a rail stop on the line to Split; the 2026 HŽ Passenger Transport timetable lists numerous services between Split and Kaštel Stari. For example, train 5524 reaches Kaštel Stari from Split at 08:46, while train 5546 arrives at 20:56. Some morning services do not run at weekends or during part of the summer season, so the travel date determines the available train. The City of Kaštela also publishes public-transport notices covering the Kaštel Stari–Split connection.
Koriolan Cipico built it on a sea reef in 1476, and it was reconstructed in Renaissance style after a fire in 1493.
The tourist board lists the pebble beach Đardin and the First and Second Embankments.
A marked path from Kaštel Stari climbs to the Malačka pass at 480 metres.
