Gomilica’s old quarter grew around Kaštilac, a Renaissance defensive compound erected on rocks in the sea by Benedictine nuns to protect their estate and its residents. The stone bridge still forms the memorable entrance to the enclosure, while nearby Brce remains the principal open space of the historic settlement. Ancient stone fragments incorporated into houses point to settlement around Kaštela Bay long before the fortress was built. The old Church of St Jerome, the public washhouse at Torac and the large Marina Kaštela add distinct layers to the village, placing traditional fishing boats alongside modern sailing yachts.

Torac is Gomilica’s concrete bathing spot and works well for a quick swim during a walk through the historic waterfront. Farther west, Giričić–Kamp has a pebble shore beside the area traditionally associated with the campsite, while Sokolana provides another pebble beach along the Gomilica section of the bay. The surfaces make a practical difference: swimmers use steps or the edge of the concrete platform at Torac, whereas water shoes are useful on the rounded stones at Giričić and Sokolana. All three bathing places can be combined with a coastal walk beginning at Kaštilac.

Begin by crossing Kaštilac’s stone bridge and exploring the narrow lanes within the compact 16th-century defensive settlement. Back on Brce, continue to the old Church of St Jerome and look for its carved Baroque doors, associated with Gomilica-born craftsman and priest Fulgencije Bakotić. Follow the waterfront to the historic Torac washhouse, then pause for a swim at Torac or Giričić. Toward sunset, extend the walk to Marina Kaštela: the view across its masts to the bay and Kaštilac neatly captures the transition from Gomilica’s fortified maritime past to its present-day sailing culture.
Kaštel Gomilica stands on the busy corridor between Split and Trogir, making it straightforward to reach by road from either direction. Promet’s route 37 has traditionally linked Split and Solin with the Kaštela settlements and Trogir; when booking accommodation, check its distance from a stop on the old coastal road. Kaštel Gomilica railway station lies inland from the historic waterfront, so reaching Kaštilac with luggage involves more than a short harbour stroll. Private yachts can arrive through Marina Kaštela, but Kaštilac is not a ferry port; scheduled island services depart from Split or Trogir.
Kaštilac was built in the 16th century by Benedictine nuns from Split’s Monastery of St Arnirus and connected to the shore by a stone bridge.
Torac has a concrete bathing platform, while Giričić–Kamp and Sokolana are listed as pebble beaches.
Kaštilac in Kaštel Gomilica was used as a filming location for season four of Game of Thrones.
Construction of Kaštilac began in 1529 and was completed around 1545.
