Vardarac
About this place
Vardarac is a Baranja village in the Municipality of Bilje, set on the visitor route between Bilje and Lug and along the western edge of the former Kopački Rit floodplain. Its Croatian name preserves the story of Hungarian Várdaróc: the settlement was once called Darócz, while “Vár”, meaning a fort, was added in the early 20th century. Hungarian heritage remains visible in the village’s predominantly Hungarian population, its ground paprika and Kakasütés, a local Shrovetide custom performed in February. Vardarac is the only settlement in Bilje municipality with an Ethno House containing an ethnographic collection, and its riding club offers horseback experiences for visitors. The location also makes it possible to pair village heritage with the wetlands shaped by the Danube and Drava, although visitors inside Kopački Rit must remain on marked routes intended for sightseeing. Vardarac consequently suits travellers interested in Baranja’s Hungarian traditions, paprika, horses and floodplain scenery rather than a dense programme of urban sights.
Vardarac’s identity rests on Hungarian language and customs, Baranja paprika and the nearby floodplain world of Kopački Rit. The older name Darócz has been associated with processing hunted game, while the Hungarian prefix Vár was added in the early 20th century. The village’s most distinctive tradition is Kakasütés, an old Hungarian Shrovetide custom staged in February with young people from the local community. An Ethno House holds Vardarac’s ethnographic collection, while the village riding club adds horseback experiences to its modest visitor offer. East of the wider settlement landscape begins the system of marshes, raised ridges, backwaters and channels formed by the floodwaters of the Danube and Drava.

Things to do
Begin in Vardarac with the Ethno House and its local collection, then look for the ground paprika for which the village is known. The riding club offers a reason to stay longer and experience Baranja’s level countryside from horseback. Continue the day towards Kopački Rit: Vardarac stands among the rural settlements on the western edge of the former floodplain, making the wetland landscape a natural companion to the village visit. Once inside the Nature Park, use only marked paths and areas designated for visitors; swimming, unauthorised camping and wandering through sensitive habitats are prohibited. This sequence links Vardarac’s Hungarian-Baranja heritage, horses and paprika with the nearby ecosystem shaped by the Danube and Drava.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Vardarac lies on the Baranja visitor route between Bilje and Lug and is reached through the road network of Bilje municipality. Bilje, only five kilometres from Osijek, forms the southern gateway to the municipality that also includes Vardarac, Kopačevo, Lug and Tikveš. A car or bicycle is practical for linking these dispersed places, particularly when Kopački Rit is included in the same day. Official directions to the Tikveš Presentation and Education Centre lead from Osijek through Bilje and Vardarac before turning towards Tikveš at Lug. Because the tourism sources for Vardarac do not publish a dependable local timetable, any public-transport connection should be checked for the intended travel date.
