About
Mursa is Osijek’s ancient predecessor, positioned by an important crossing of the Drava River. The Romans gradually established a military presence at an earlier settlement, and under Emperor Hadrian the town received colonial status as Colonia Aelia Mursa. In 351, the armies of Constantius II and Magnentius fought nearby in a struggle for the imperial throne. The site now lies within the modern city, so its heritage is encountered through the protected archaeological zone and archaeological finds rather than a fully preserved set of ruins. It suits visitors who want to connect a walk around Osijek with the city’s Roman past.
