Umag is a base for exploring north-western Istria through its coast, compact historic centre and outings to neighbouring seaside places. In town, head towards the tip of the old peninsula, where the Town Museum occupies the Bishop's Tower. Archaeological objects give the past a more tangible context than a walk past houses and squares alone, while exhibitions introduce contemporary art as well. For a longer stay, avoid treating Umag and the Savudrija coastline as one extended walking circuit. Plan Savudrija separately: its old harbour and lighthouse offer two distinct subjects, one concerned with a sheltered landing place and the other with navigation along an open coast. Umag suits travellers who like to alternate a short cultural visit with time beside the sea rather than spend every day in the same bathing area. Choose one town theme, such as archaeology or an old-centre walk, and leave the rest of the day for the coast. Keeping the town and wider Riviera distinct also helps with accommodation and transport planning.
Here Umag means the town, not every settlement in its administrative area. The centre and museum can form one sightseeing unit, while Savudrija is an additional outing. When selecting accommodation, compare the actual address with your intended stops rather than relying solely on the destination label in a listing.

The museum in the Bishop's Tower offers a starting point for understanding Umag. Relate archaeological objects to the town's maritime setting, while treating contemporary-art exhibitions as another curatorial strand. The presence of Roman finds in a museum does not mean that every building in the surrounding centre should be described as ancient.

Laguna Stella Maris is a developed Umag beach beside the ATP stadium, with pine shade, easy water access and sports facilities.
Beach · Umag
Katoro is a developed public beach north of Umag, combining pebble, rocky and paved sections with extensive sports facilities nearby.
For a day, combine the old centre, museum and time beside the sea. With three days, devote one to Umag, another to Savudrija and the third to a relaxed coastal outing or another exhibition. Savudrija's old harbour and lighthouse are not the same attraction and should be located separately when planning the route.
Savudrija makes a logical addition to a town visit. The old harbour introduces the history of landing and surviving harbour features, while the lighthouse belongs to another stretch of coast. Do not plan interior access to the lighthouse as a guaranteed public service: the landmark is verified, but a current interior tour programme is not.
