The Sipar peninsula stands about five kilometres north of Umag, beside the coast near Zambratija. Research has established that the site developed through Roman, Late Antique and early medieval periods. Before the Roman colonisation of Istria it served as a Roman military post; later, the presumed settlement of Insula Sepomaia emerged and remained active until the end of the 1st century AD. The Archaeological Museum of Istria first investigated the site in the 1960s, and the Umag Town Museum has conducted systematic research since 2013. It is an evocative coastal stop for walkers and visitors interested in north-western Istria’s archaeology.
