Sukošan lies eleven kilometres southeast of Zadar on a broad bay historically connected with agriculture and the estates of Zadar’s church and nobility. Its most unusual historic remnant stands on a small islet in the bay: the ruins of the archbishops’ summer residence, commonly called Palac, remain isolated in shallow water and form one of the settlement’s defining views. In the centre stands the parish Church of St Cassian, while St Martin’s Church and the cemetery chapel of Our Lady of Mercy add further heritage points. In the Middle Ages Sukošan belonged to the Zadar district and later gained a defensive role during Ottoman incursions. Today its nautical identity is strongly shaped by D-Marin Dalmacija, located between Sukošan and Bibinje and among the largest marinas on the Croatian coast. Beaches and waterfront areas face the Zadar archipelago, while Zadar itself is close enough for an evening or half-day excursion without changing accommodation.
Sukošan is a village and small harbour in Zlatna Luka Bay, ten kilometres south-east of Zadar, where cultivated fields run down to the sea. Its present-day character is defined by Marina Dalmacija in Zlatna Luka and the shore leading towards the Tustica natural area. The older settlement emerges around St Cassian’s church, recorded in 1396 and reshaped in 1642, and at Palac in Sukošan Bay. Archbishop Maffeo Vallaresso built this summer residence in 1470; its ruins now stand in the shallow water.

Palac, the remains of the Zadar archbishops’ summer residence on a small islet in Sukošan Bay, is the settlement’s most recognisable historic image. In the centre, the parish Church of St Cassian preserves the name of the patron saint from whom the medieval form Sanctus Cassanus derived. The Romanesque Church of St Martin in the Prljane area and the 1660 cemetery chapel of Our Lady of Mercy add further layers of sacred heritage. Sukošan was fortified by the 15th century, so today’s calm waterfront occupies a site that once played a defensive role on the Zadar frontier.
Dječji raj is Sukošan’s principal shallow-water beach: a sandy seabed meets a shoreline of sand, pebbles and stone slabs. The local tourism strategy records a length of about one kilometre, an asphalt approach, showers, changing cabins, eco toilets, sunbed and pedal-boat hire, plus adapted access for visitors with reduced mobility. Choose Mala Makarska for a different surface of stone slabs and fine pebbles, with showers, changing cabins, toilets and volleyball and basketball courts. The municipal destination plan also lists Zlatna Luka, D-Marin Dalmacija Beach and the dog beach among its bathing areas.

Start at St Cassian’s church in central Sukošan, where the north-west entrance records its 1642 remodelling. Walk next to the waterfront opposite Palac: the ruins of Archbishop Maffeo Vallaresso’s 1470 summer residence are best appreciated from shore. Continue towards Zlatna Luka and Marina Dalmacija, the harbour that has made Sukošan a nautical centre. For a more active finale, take the 6.6-kilometre Tustica circuit; the summit looks across the Pašman Channel and Kornati, with Zadar and the Ravni kotari hinterland on the other side.
Sukošan Tourist Board is at Trg mladeži 4, 23206 Sukošan; its information phone number is +385 23 393 345. Stay around Dječji raj and the old waterfront for a walkable base near Palac and the beach, or choose Zlatna Luka for Marina Dalmacija. The municipality lists both general and dental clinics in Sukošan. When heading towards Tustica, use the local information boards: the municipal plan says the signposting directs visitors to attractions, sacred sites, walking routes and natural locations.
Sukošan stands on the Adriatic coastal road between Zadar and Biograd, with access to the A1 motorway through the Zadar area and the Zadar 2 interchange. Liburnija Zadar operates the suburban Zadar–Sukošan connection; the published timetable labels it route 120, but departure times must be checked for the actual travel date because the available document dates from 2021 and explicitly warns that schedules may change. Zadar Airport is inland at Zemunik, while Gaženica ferry port lies on Zadar’s southern edge. Arrivals by private boat use Marina Dalmacija at Zlatna Luka, positioned between Sukošan and Bibinje.
