Built in 1543, the Land Gate formed the ceremonial entrance through Zadar’s fortifications into the historic core. Its design is associated with Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli, and the composition is dominated by a central passage, smaller side openings and the Lion of St Mark, emblem of the Venetian Republic. The gate is best understood together with the adjacent ramparts and Foša harbour, where its defensive and representative functions become clear. Since 2017, Zadar’s defensive system has formed part of UNESCO’s serial World Heritage property of Venetian fortifications. Reach the gate on foot from Five Wells Square or by following the waterfront around Foša.
