The Monastery of St Mary stands beside the Roman Forum and the Church of St Mary, in one of the most historically layered parts of Zadar’s peninsula. Its Benedictine community has roots reaching back to the eleventh century and preserved significant religious and artistic heritage through periods of war and destruction. For visitors, the outstanding attraction is the church-art exhibition commonly known as the Gold and Silver of Zadar, built around objects safeguarded by the nuns over centuries. Combine the complex with the Forum, St Donatus and the cathedral, all within a few minutes’ walk. The convent itself remains a living religious community, so access differs from that of a conventional museum.
