The Cathedral of St Anastasia stands at the centre of Zadar’s episcopal complex, immediately beside the Roman forum and the Church of St Donatus. Its present appearance is predominantly Romanesque, with a richly articulated façade, rose windows and portals, although the site’s history reaches back to earlier Early Christian buildings. The interior has three aisles, while the cathedral bell tower forms one of the most recognisable vertical accents in Zadar’s old town. A visit is most rewarding when combined with the forum and St Donatus, allowing Roman, Early Christian and medieval layers to be compared in one compact area. As an active church, visit respectfully and avoid disrupting liturgical services.
