The Church of St Elijah the Prophet occupies part of the former Roman Capitolium close to Zadar’s Forum. It was built in the sixteenth century on the site of a medieval church of the same dedication and remodelled in the eighteenth century in Late Baroque style. Belonging to the Serbian Orthodox Church, it preserves a treasury of icons, liturgical objects, crosses, books and manuscripts, with notable icons dating from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Its setting makes it a rewarding stop when exploring the ancient and Christian layers of central Zadar. Because it remains an active church, interior access depends on the liturgical schedule.
