The Archaeological Museum Zadar is among Croatia’s oldest museum institutions: founded in 1832, it developed into a separate archaeological museum in 1880. Its present building beside the Forum lets visitors examine finds almost directly beside the ancient centre of the city. Collections cover prehistory, the Roman period and the Middle Ages across Zadar and northern Dalmatia, making the museum especially useful before or after seeing the Forum, St Donatus and the city walls. Displays provide context for objects that can otherwise be difficult to interpret at archaeological sites. Allow at least an hour for a focused visit, particularly if Roman daily life and early medieval heritage interest you.
