The Dominican Monastery of St. Peter the Martyr was founded in 1482 by German, an Italian Dominican friar from Piacenza, with the church completed and consecrated on December 3, 1488. In 1546, Petar Hektorović placed his altar and his mother Katarina's tomb in the church, and he himself was later buried there with his grave positioned to the right of the main altar. During the 1571 Turkish raid, the monastery was severely plundered and burned, but subsequently rebuilt and fortified with two defensive towers. The monastery museum houses Paleolithic, Greek, and Roman artifacts along with ceramics from various historical periods. The most valuable artwork is Tintoretto's "The Lamentation of Christ" by the renowned Venetian master Jacopo Robusti Tintoretto (1518-1594), originally displayed on Hektorović's altar.
