The Dominican Monastery of St Peter Martyr was founded in 1482 by Friar German of Piacenza. After Ottoman attacks on Hvar, the complex was further fortified, while the monastery church was altered and rebuilt in later periods. The church contains the tomb of poet Petar Hektorović and his mother, and the museum collection preserves archaeological finds from Greek Pharos, old books and manuscripts, liturgical objects and important paintings. Among the best-known works is a Lamentation of Christ attributed to Jacopo Tintoretto. The monastery is easily reached from central Stari Grad and makes a strong continuation after visiting Tvrdalj and St Stephen’s Square.
