St John’s Church belongs to one of the oldest sacred layers of Stari Grad. The Early Christian church, with surviving figurative mosaics, dates to the 5th and 6th centuries and was altered several times during the early Middle Ages. Nearby are the foundations of the associated Church of St Mary and an Early Christian baptistery, while remains of walls, houses and streets from 4th-century BC Greek Pharos survive in the immediate area. The site is therefore important not simply as a church but as a place where the Greek town, Late Antiquity and the medieval settlement overlap. It fits best into a walking tour of the oldest part of the historic centre.
