St Stephen’s Church stands on the most important historic square in Stari Grad, on a site connected with the island of Hvar’s earlier cathedral tradition. Construction of the present Baroque church began in 1605, with local craftsmen building the structure and Venetian artists contributing altars and paintings. The 18th-century bell tower is particularly notable because ancient city-wall blocks were reused in its lower sections, and a Roman ship relief is built into it. The square in front of the church once hosted civic decisions and commercial activity; today it is a quieter part of the historic core where visitors can study the architecture and multiple historical layers of the town.
