On the southern side of Stari Grad’s historic centre stands St Nicholas Church, associated with the town’s confraternity of mariners and fishermen. The local tourist board dates its construction to the 14th century, while the present single-nave building took shape around 1500 in a Gothic-Renaissance style. Look for the square apse, barrel vault with transverse arches, later western extension, two Renaissance portals, rose window and bell gable. Inside are votive paintings and mementoes of shipwreck survivors, including a gilded wooden altar made by Antonio Porri in 1612. Each St Nicholas Day, the community traditionally burns an old boat in front of the church.
