The Church of St. Roch stands immediately beside Petar Hektorović’s Tvrdalj and is dedicated to the patron saint of Stari Grad. This Renaissance church dates from 1569, while its small bell-gable was added in 1783. Construction work on the steps in the 19th century uncovered a mosaic floor from Roman baths, commemorated by an inscription cut into the site. The church therefore links the Renaissance townscape with the much older layers of ancient Pharos. Its surroundings are especially lively on St. Roch’s Day, 16 August, when Stari Grad holds a major procession and celebration. Pair it with a visit to Tvrdalj opposite.
