Church of St. Peter the Martyr, the main church of the Dominican complex founded in 1482, had its original medieval structure demolished in 1893 to make way for the present church with magnificent marble altars, artistic sculptures, and valuable paintings. The tomb of Petar Hektorović, the renowned Croatian Renaissance writer and poet, occupies a significant place within the church as a memorial. The most important artwork is Tintoretto's "The Lamentation of Christ" by the celebrated Venetian master Jacopo Robusti Tintoretto (1518-1594), originally displayed on Hektorović's altar in the church. The church underwent restoration in 1682, and the monastery itself in 1727. Rich in icons, sculptures, and various liturgical objects, the church bears witness to centuries of spiritual heritage and artistic patronage by prominent local figures including nobility and merchants who contributed to its artistic adornment over generations.
