Belica, Međimurje County
About this place
Belica sits where Upper and Lower Međimurje meet, yet its strongest identity comes from the surrounding fields and potato cultivation. The village became particularly associated with potatoes after the Second World War, and local grower Stanko Premuš was named champion at a national agricultural exhibition in Zagreb in 1955. Since 2025, that heritage has had a purpose-built home at the Potato Museum on 23 Ljudevita Gaja Street. Designed as an oval “skin” emerging from the ground, its 150-square-metre interior accommodates exhibitions, educational programmes, fairs and local produce. Belica’s other major landmark is the parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, first built in Gothic form in the latter 13th century and remodelled into its present shape in 1598. The village itself is documented from 1256, while a Bronze Age hoard uncovered during preparations for clay extraction in 1964 points to a far older human presence. A short walk through Belica therefore links a medieval church, the former clay industry and a modern celebration of the crop that became the village emblem.
Belica stands at the meeting point of Upper and Lower Međimurje, largely on a younger Pleistocene terrace east of Čakovec. Its earliest known record, under the name Terra Beosvola, dates to 1256, while the parish appears in documents from 1334. Two materials shaped the village economy: clay, processed by the local brickworks from the early 20th century until the early 1980s, and potatoes, for which Belica became known after the Second World War. In 1964, land being prepared for clay extraction yielded a hoard of sickles, axes, weapons and raw bronze dated to the 11th century BC. Today, the Potato Museum and the potato flower on the municipal coat of arms give visible form to Belica’s agricultural identity.

Things to do
Start at the Potato Museum at 23 Ljudevita Gaja Street, opened on 30 August 2025 during Belica’s Potato Festival. Its oval architecture was conceived as a potato skin pushing through the soil, while the interior is arranged for displays, workshops, fairs and presentations by local producers. Continue to the potato monument, which served as the starting point for the procession of vintage agricultural machinery at the 2025 festival. Finish at the church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Gothic building first erected in the latter 13th century and given its present form in 1598. This compact route connects Belica’s farming tradition, contemporary food interpretation and the oldest architectural landmark in the village.
