Sveta Jelena
About
The Saint Helen site in Šenkovec preserves the remains of a Pauline monastery founded in 1376 by Stephen II Lacković on the Varhely estate near Čakovec. Its original monastic church was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and All Saints, and its sanctuary received valuable Gothic murals in the 14th century. In the mid-16th century, Nikola IV Zrinski of Sziget built his family tomb beside the church. After the Pauline order was dissolved in 1786, the complex was altered, and the 1880 earthquake caused further damage. Visitors can now see the Chapel of Saint Helen and archaeological remains of the monastery, nave and Zrinski tomb; visits require advance arrangement with the Međimurje County Museum in Čakovec.
