About this place

Šenkovec is a Međimurje settlement and the seat of its municipality in Donje Međimurje, three kilometres north of Čakovec. It stands at 171 metres above sea level, while the municipality also includes Knezovec. The area’s historical centre of gravity lies at Sveta Jelena, once a separate settlement, rather than in today’s village centre. The Chapel of St Helena is the only visible survivor of a much larger Pauline monastic complex. Archaeological remains of the monastery, church nave and the Zrinski mausoleum lie beneath the surrounding ground. The chapel preserves a High Gothic cycle of medieval wall paintings, dated by the municipality to the 1380s. The mausoleum served as the burial place of members of the Zrinski family, beginning with Nikola Šubić Zrinski of Sziget. Međimurje Museum Čakovec holds the cover slab from his tomb. The complex is individually protected as a cultural asset of national importance and is owned by the museum. This meeting point of Pauline heritage, the Zrinski family and the surviving sanctuary gives Šenkovec its distinctive historical character.

Šenkovec’s identity is anchored in the Sveta Jelena complex on Jelenska Street, where the surviving sanctuary of a former Pauline church now serves as the Chapel of St Helen. Beneath the site lie archaeological remains of the monastery, the church nave and the Zrinski burial place, bringing two major strands of Međimurje history together. After the Pauline order was dissolved, the complex passed to a religious foundation in 1786; the Knežević family received it in 1802 and converted it into a manor, demolishing the nave and the Zrinski chapel. The Chapel of St Helen is a protected cultural property registered as Z-911, while the Međimurje County Museum oversees the archaeologically explored, museum-presented site. This contrast between the standing chapel and the buried monastic plan makes Sveta Jelena the historical core of Šenkovec.

Things to do

Begin a visit to Šenkovec at the Sveta Jelena complex, where the chapel’s exterior is the surviving sanctuary of the former Pauline monastery. Inside, focus on the Gothic frescoes, especially because they are among the few visible traces of the wider complex. Then read the ground around the chapel alongside the unseen archaeological remains of the church nave, monastery and Zrinski mausoleum. Međimurje Museum Čakovec states that chapel visits can be arranged in advance; its collection in Čakovec also holds the cover slab from Nikola Šubić Zrinski of Sziget’s tomb.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Šenkovec functions as a road-linked neighbour of Čakovec, with roughly three kilometres separating their centres. The D209 state road passes through the village, while the D227 from the Štrigova direction meets it in Šenkovec, providing access from Upper Međimurje. The A4 Zagreb–Goričan motorway connection is about 15 kilometres away. Šenkovec has no railway station of its own; rail passengers use Čakovec, an important junction for services toward Varaždin, Kotoriba and Slovenia. The short distance from the county capital also makes cycling realistic, and the L19 route directly links Šenkovec with Čakovec and Nedelišće. Visitors heading for the Sveta Jelena complex must leave the principal through-road and follow local directions into the village.
