About
The Orthodox Church of St George stands on Ban Jelačić Square beside Varaždin’s market. It was built in 1884, when the town’s Orthodox community was small, with master builder Radoslav Atzinger responsible for the construction. Its exterior is restrained: the single-nave building ends in a three-sided sanctuary, while a small bell tower rises behind the western façade. Inside are valuable furnishings as well as decorative painting on the walls and vaults. The church rewards visitors interested in nineteenth-century sacred architecture and in the city’s multi-confessional history.
