Čakovec
About this place
Čakovec is Međimurje’s administrative and cultural centre, arranged around a pedestrian core, Zrinski Park and the fortified Old Town. Its palace and ramparts house the Međimurje Museum, founded in 1954, with displays devoted to the Zrinski family, regional art and the intangible heritage presented in the Treasury of Međimurje. The Zrinski, Althan and Feštetić families all shaped the castle, although the Zrinski era from 1546 to 1671 remains central to the city’s identity. A visit naturally combines the museum, a walk through the park, Republic Square and the Franciscan complex of St Nicholas. Flat streets and short distances favour walking and cycling, while both railway and bus stations make a car unnecessary. Local menus introduce meat preserved in lard, pumpkin-seed oil, homestyle soups and Međimurska gibanica. In late July and early August, Porcijunkulovo turns the centre into the city’s largest annual visitor event.
Čakovec’s historic axis is not a grand avenue but the short sequence linking Republic Square, Zrinski Park and the moat of the Old Town. The Zrinski family governed Međimurje from this fortress between 1546 and 1671, making their legacy fundamental to local identity. The Althan counts gave the palace its mid-18th-century Baroque form, adding a second floor and replacing the old entrance tower. A city museum moved into the complex in 1954 and later became the Međimurje Museum. Modern Čakovec links this heritage with a pedestrian centre, landscaped parks and events on Republic Square, keeping its principal visitor attractions within an easy walk.
Things to see
Čakovec Old Town combines a palace with defensive fortifications surrounded by parkland, its present form reflecting the Zrinski, Althan and Feštetić families. The Međimurje Museum holds tens of thousands of objects, while currently accessible displays include the Zrinski and Čakovec Old Town exhibition, the Art Gallery and the Treasury of Međimurje. Opened in the restored fortifications in 2021, the Treasury interprets the region’s intangible heritage and received Croatia’s museum award for that year’s best permanent display. The Franciscan Church of St Nicholas forms the centre’s other historic anchor. Between church and castle, Republic Square serves as Čakovec’s principal event space and the most convenient starting point for exploring the pedestrian core.

Things to do
Start the morning with a circuit of the Old Town moat and a walk through Zrinski Park, then enter the Treasury of Međimurje in the restored fortifications. Continue with the Zrinski and Čakovec Old Town display inside the palace, where the castle’s story is tied to Međimurje’s leading noble families. From the park, cross into Republic Square and Ulica kralja Tomislava, the centre’s principal pedestrian spine. Finish at the Franciscan Church of St Nicholas and the historic town façades in the surrounding streets. Pause at a central café or pastry shop, saving Međimurska gibanica or a pumpkin-seed-oil dish for lunch at one of the restaurants promoted on the city’s gastronomic route.
Food and drink
Čakovec’s gastronomic route presents Međimurje cooking through city restaurants that serve regional recipes in both traditional and contemporary forms. Restaurant Stari Grad stands beside the city’s main historic complex, making it a convenient continuation of a museum and Zrinski Park visit. Central Trattoria Rustica provides an Italian-leaning alternative, while the revived Huta 1892 is promoted as Čakovec’s oldest café. Regional menus are the place to seek meat preserved in lard, dishes finished with pumpkin-seed oil and Međimurska gibanica, the layered pastry combining poppy seeds, walnuts, apples and fresh cheese. Reservations are sensible at the better-known central venues during Porcijunkulovo and the city’s Advent programme.

Practical information
Practical information
The Čakovec Tourist Board is based at Kralja Tomislava 1 beside the pedestrian centre. The Međimurje Museum occupies Trg Republike 5; its published 2026 schedule lists 10:00–18:00 on Monday, 08:00–18:00 Tuesday to Friday and 10:00–16:00 at weekends. Guided group visits require at least 48 hours’ advance notice. Structural works mean that not every older department is currently accessible, while the Zrinski and Čakovec Old Town exhibition, Art Gallery and Treasury of Međimurje remain listed as open. Holiday closures and changes caused by conservation work should be checked on the museum’s own website before travelling.
Parking
In 2026, municipal company GKP Čakom manages 2,003 charged spaces divided among zones 0–4 and residents-only zone S. For the Old Town, useful spaces lie along the western and northern edges of Zrinski Park in Zrinsko-frankopanska and Vukovarska streets, both in zone 4. Zone 4 costs €0.40 per hour, zones 2 and 3 cost €0.50, and zone 1 costs €0.60. Standard charging hours are 08:00–15:00 on weekdays and 08:00–13:00 on Saturdays. Orange zone 0 permits one free stay of up to 30 minutes per day, which is too short for a proper visit to the museum complex.
Getting there and around
Čakovec railway station is a useful hub for northern Croatia: HŽ Passenger Transport lists Varaždin–Čakovec services in its current notices and publishes specific weekday and weekend trains for that route. The town is also served by cross-border trains to Slovenia, on the Varaždin–Čakovec–Lendava and Čakovec–Središče routes. Check HŽPP’s live timetable and service notices before travelling, as works closed the Varaždin–Čakovec line on 3 and 4 October 2026, with replacement buses arranged.
