Lopar occupies the northern part of Rab Island and differs from most Kvarner destinations through its unusually large number of natural sandy beaches. The local tourist board lists 22 sandy beaches around the peninsula, with the best-known, Rajska plaža, stretching for about 1.5 kilometres beside the San Marino resort area. Its shallow sandy seabed is particularly associated with family swimming, while Sahara, Ciganka and Stolac are more remote coves reached on foot or by boat; all three have a long naturist association. The sand is not only visually distinctive: geological research links Lopar’s beaches to the weathering of local Eocene sandstones and sandy marls. Lopar also has a ferry port with a connection to Valbiska on Krk, while Rab Town is reached by road across the island. Local identity is strongly tied to Saint Marinus, the stonemason whom Lopar tradition identifies as a native of the village and the founder of the Republic of San Marino.
Lopar occupies the northern end of Rab, spreading between its ferry port, the older village around St John the Baptist’s Church and the San Marino holiday area. The Lopar and Fruga peninsulas set it apart from the rest of the island: erosion has carved gullies, pyramids and coves into soft sandy rock, while the marked Premužić trails cross Rab’s geopark. Although Rab Town lies only about 12 kilometres away, Lopar’s ferry connection with Valbiska gives the village its own gateway to the island. Its character is therefore shaped as much by sandstone terrain, small fishing harbours and the local celebration of St John on 24 June as by the resort beside Paradise Beach.

A Lopar visit can join two very different stops: the parish church of St John the Baptist in the village centre and the Lopar Geomorphological Garden on the peninsula. The church is dedicated to Lopar’s patron saint, and Ivanja is marked there on 24 June, when locals bring lavender bundles known as bubice. The garden, part of the Rab Island Geopark, has 50 marked geological points with fossils, unusually shaped rocks and geological profiles. The Priroda public institution records that the Rab geopark project was developed with HAZU geologists and envisaged educational trails and geo-viewpoints on the Lopar peninsula.
Lopar’s sand is linked to the weathering of local Eocene sandstones and sandy marls. This geology gives northern Rab a landscape of sandy coves and eroded rock that differs clearly from the limestone shores common across much of the Adriatic.
Rajska plaža is about 1.5 kilometres long and is the best known of the 22 sandy beaches listed by the local tourist board around Lopar. Sahara, Ciganka and Stolac are more remote sandy coves with a long naturist association, reached on foot or by boat.
Begin in old Lopar at St John the Baptist’s Church, then walk down towards the small harbour and the San Marino resort. For a more active second stage, follow a marked Premužić trail through the geopark, where gullies and sculpted sandstone formations reveal the peninsula’s unusual geology. In the afternoon, taxi boats leave Lučica for less accessible coves, while glass-bottom vessels circle the Lopar peninsula and reveal the shallows without a swim. Full-day cruises also link Lopar with Goli Otok, wooded Sveti Grgur and Baška, combining a former prison complex, island scenery and broad Kvarner views in one outing.
Lopar’s dining scene is divided between the old village, the ferry-port area and the San Marino resort, with Rab’s tourism board listing roughly 50 establishments in Lopar. Menus worth seeking out feature Rab lamb, fresh fish, squid and dishes finished with island olive oil, followed by the island’s distinctive Rab cake. A table in central Lopar fits naturally after visiting St John’s Church, whereas the restaurants around San Marino are better placed for a day at Paradise Beach. As individual venues and seasonal opening periods change, the Lopar Tourist Board’s current restaurant directory is the most useful starting point.
The Lopar Municipal Tourist Board is at Lopar 284 and its information desk can be reached on +385 51 775 508 or at [email protected]. Its published schedule lists opening from 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday and 8 am to 1 pm on Sundays between 15 June and 31 August, with stated midday breaks; hours are shorter outside that period. Lučica San Marino is the place to look for excursion and beach-taxi departures. The tourist board’s Lopar map is particularly useful for locating Premužić trails, churches and remote coves that cannot be seen from the village centre.
Lopar has a ferry port with a connection to Valbiska on Krk, while the road across Rab leads to Rab Town and the Mišnjak ferry approach. Timetables should be checked for the specific travel date.
