Omišalj occupies a high position above its bay on northern Krk and is one of the first historic settlements encountered after arriving on the island. The old town on the hill is distinct from the waterfront around Pesja Bay, so exploring the area involves descending towards the sea. Pesja beach lies about one kilometre from the town in the innermost part of Omišalj Bay, backed by pine trees and equipped with a picnic area and beach-volleyball court. Nearby, the Fulfinum-Mirine archaeological zone is associated with a Roman town and an early Christian complex, adding a much older historical layer than the medieval centre alone. Rijeka Airport is located in the Omišalj area, making the town particularly practical for air arrivals. For longer stays, neighbouring Njivice offers a different seaside atmosphere, while the Krk Bridge provides quick access back to the mainland and Rijeka.
Omišalj lies in northern Krk on high ground above a broad bay. The historic centre and waterfront are not on the same level, so walking through the town feels different from the flat promenades typical of many Adriatic resorts. Its position near the Krk Bridge and Rijeka Airport makes Omišalj one of the island’s most accessible settlements for arrivals by road or air. At the same time, the Fulfinum-Mirine archaeological area shows that the importance of this location is far older than its modern transport role. For swimming, visitors descend from the historic centre towards Pesja Bay, which is physically separate from the main old-town area.

Fulfinum-Mirine is the principal archaeological destination around Omišalj: the remains of the Roman town of Fulfinum and the early Christian complex at Mirine introduce the ancient and late-antique history of the bay. Within the old town, the walk focuses on churches, stone lanes and viewpoints from the elevated settlement towards the sea. These create two clearly separate historical areas, so Fulfinum is not simply another stop on a short walking circuit through the centre. It is more practical to combine the old town with Pesja, while treating the archaeological site as a separate outing to another part of Omišalj Bay.
Pesja is Omišalj’s best-known beach and lies about one kilometre from the town in the innermost part of Omišalj Bay. It is a rocky bathing area with developed access, while a pine forest behind the shore contains a picnic area and a beach-volleyball court. The beach can be reached on foot or by bicycle, and parking is available. Its position below the old town gives Pesja a different setting from the beaches in neighbouring Njivice: swimming here is tied to the deep bay and views back towards elevated Omišalj, while Njivice has a longer resort waterfront facing more openly towards Kvarner.
Start in Omišalj’s old quarter, perched on an 85-metre cliff, then descend through Dubec Park towards Pesja Bay. From Pesja, the coastal path continues to Sepen Bay and the Fulfinum–Mirine archaeological complex, where the remains of a first-century Roman municipium and an early Christian basilica can be explored. The walk can be extended to the ruins of Fortičina, set on higher ground above Omišalj Bay. For a different finish, return towards the centre and hire an e-bike through Go2Bike; Omišalj is one of eight rental-station locations on Krk. Following the old town–Dubec–Pesja–Mirine sequence neatly connects the settlement’s elevated historic core with its shoreline.
In Omišalj, look for Krk šurlice pasta, sheep’s cheese, lamb, small oily fish and presnac, a dessert made with young sheep’s cheese; the island’s dishes are often paired with Vrbnik Žlahtina. The local tourist board lists Kaštel, Villa Eva, 7 Seas and Maris at Camp Omišalj among the area’s restaurants. Kaštel serves Croatian and Mediterranean cooking, including fish, seafood, pasta, grilled dishes and pizza, with outdoor seating and takeaway available. Maris is convenient for guests staying near the campsite and the southern side of the bay, whereas Kaštel is better placed for combining dinner with an evening walk through Omišalj’s old quarter.
The Omišalj tourist office is at Prikešte 13, with +385 51 841 042 listed as its contact number. Despite its name, Rijeka Airport’s terminal is on Krk at Hamec 1 in Omišalj, making the town particularly practical before an early flight. In 2026, the airport publishes its shuttle timetable month by month; the one-way fare between the terminal and Omišalj is €8 under the price list effective from 1 May 2025. For short local journeys, Omišalj also has Go2Bike electric bicycles, hired through the operator’s app and available around the clock.
In Omišalj, paid public parking is seasonal, running from 1 June to 15 September. The 2026 list places Brgučena in Zone I; the Pesja harbour car park and levels one and two of Pod orišina in Zone II; and Kančinar, Bjanižov and level three of Pod orišina in Zone III. For swimming at Pesja Bay, the harbour car park is the most direct choice, while Pod orišina and Bjanižov are nearer the approach to the old town. Payment is also available through the PayDo app, and the local tourist board lists the same Omišalj sites managed by Pesja d.o.o.
Omišalj is reached by road across the Krk Bridge, with no ferry required, and Rijeka Airport lies roughly one kilometre east of the town. In 2026 the airport publishes its own shuttle schedule monthly; a one-way journey between the terminal and Omišalj costs €8 under the fare valid since May 2025. Travellers continuing to Cres or Rab should drive to Valbiska, about 20 minutes away, where ferries leave for Merag and Lopar. Omišalj’s taxi rank is in the centre by the roundabout. Within the town, Go2Bike electric bicycles are particularly useful for linking the elevated old quarter with the waterfront.
