Kaštel occupies the top of Pula's central hill above the Roman and medieval streets. Built in the seventeenth century to defend the harbour for Venice, the fortress has a square arrangement with projecting angular bastions, best appreciated while exploring its exterior. Views connect the Arena, old-town rooftops and the maritime space that the fortifications were intended to oversee. The Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria occupies the building, adding exhibitions to the experience of its military architecture. The approach along Gradinski uspon climbs through the upper historic centre, making Kaštel a natural continuation from the lower Roman sites around Carrarina Street and the Forum.
