Vrata, Fužine
About this place
Vrata is a Gorski Kotar village in the Municipality of Fužine, set on a natural and transport corridor linking inland Croatia with the Rijeka hinterland. Although administratively part of the Kvarner region, Vrata is not a seaside destination: its setting is defined by forests, cool mountain air, the Zagreb–Rijeka railway and the nearby Fužine reservoirs. The village has its own railway stop, listed between Lokve and Fužine in the 2026 HŽ Passenger Transport timetable, so it can be reached from the Rijeka and Ogulin directions without a car. A day here can begin around Vrata before continuing to the Bajer lakeside path, Vrelo Cave or Lake Lepenica. Lepenica is the largest reservoir in the Fužine area and is used for summer swimming, while Bajer supports kayaking, canoeing and panoramic outings. Vrata has also been associated with a paintball park, and the Gmajna sports and recreation area is being developed as a local activity hub. Its position between the station, Fužine and the lakes makes Vrata a peaceful base for exploring Kvarner’s mountainous interior.
Vrata’s identity comes from its position in Gorski Kotar, within the Municipality of Fužine and along the Rijeka–Zagreb railway corridor. Its own station distinguishes it from many small mountain villages and provides a direct link towards Fužine, Lokve, Delnice and Rijeka. The Gmajna recreation ground is located in Vrata, while municipal development documents associate the village with a paintball facility in the local visitor offer. The Fužine reservoirs add a strong waterside element, although Vrata has no Adriatic shore: Bajer lies beside Fužine, Lepenica is the municipality’s largest lake and Potkoš sits between Fužine and Lič. This combination of railway heritage, forested surroundings and reservoirs gives Vrata a character quite different from the familiar coastal image of Kvarner.

Beaches
Vrata has no sea beach; the main local option for summer swimming is Lake Lepenica in the Fužine area. Created in 1988, Lepenica is the largest of the three local reservoirs and reaches a maximum depth of 18 metres. The Fužine tourist board describes its summer water as suitable for swimming, with temperatures rising above 23°C. Its shore remains natural and mountainous rather than resembling a serviced Adriatic beach, so visitors should choose an accessible entry point and allow for changing reservoir levels. Lake Bajer is better known for walking, kayaking, canoeing and windsurfing, while little Lake Potkoš primarily serves as a picnic and excursion spot.

Things to do
Begin in Vrata with the village’s mountain atmosphere and the Gmajna recreation area, then continue to Fužine for the circular walk around Lake Bajer. Depending on the seasonal offer, Bajer can be explored by kayak or canoe, and its regular air currents also suit windsurfing. Vrelo Cave makes a logical next stop; this visitor cave near the lake is reached by a tourist road train from central Fužine on selected departures. Finish at Lepenica, which is larger and deeper than Bajer and offers a quieter waterside setting. Travellers with additional time can connect all three Fužine reservoirs, including small Lake Potkoš below the slopes of Bitoraj.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Vrata railway station lies on the Zagreb–Rijeka line between Lokve and Fužine. The HŽ Passenger Transport timetable valid from 14 June to 12 December 2026 includes Vrata on the Rijeka–Ogulin corridor, although not every service calls at every station, so the chosen departure should be checked for the exact travel date. By road, the village connects with the municipal centre of Fužine and the Gorski Kotar route towards Lokve and Delnice. A car or bicycle provides more flexibility for reaching the lakes, Vrelo Cave and remote trailheads. Fužine Express is not public transport to Vrata; it is a seasonal visitor train operating from Fužine around Lake Bajer or towards Vrelo Cave.
