Fužine
About this place
Fužine is a Gorski Kotar village defined by water: Lake Bajer touches the settlement, larger Lake Lepenica lies just beyond it, and smaller Potkoš stretches towards Lič. Created in the 1950s, Bajer has a circular waterside path and opportunities for kayaking and boating beneath forested slopes. Lepenica, completed in 1988, warms to more than 23°C in summer and serves as the area’s principal swimming lake. At the far end of Bajer, the 300-metre Vrelo Cave is unusually accessible: its level visitor route has no steps, while the interior contains formations, a spring, a pool and a sinkhole discovered during reservoir construction. A day can combine the Bajer circuit, a guided cave visit and the climb to the 892.5-metre Preradović viewpoint. Fužine is also reachable by train and coach, and seven named public car parks serve day-trippers. Local tables remain distinctly mountainous, with Hotel Bitoraj, Konoba Volta and the Arnika hunting lodge associated with game, mushrooms and forest-fruit flavours.
Fužine is defined not by a single lake but by three reservoirs within the Ličanka and Lepenica catchments. Bajer, created in the 1950s, reaches almost into the village centre; Lepenica has been the municipality’s largest lake since 1988; and Potkoš extends the waterscape towards Lič and the foot of Bitoraj. Water and forest meet here in what the destination calls its “mountain riviera”, allowing swimming, paddling and lakeside walking in an Alpine-looking setting. The centre is compact enough to walk from the church and Gorica Park down to Bajer and continue along the shore towards Vrelo.
Things to see
Vrelo Cave is Fužine’s signature attraction. Discovered during work on Lake Bajer in the 1950s, it is estimated to be 3.5–4 million years old, and its 300-metre visitor route contains no steps. Formations, a mountain spring, a subterranean pool and a sinkhole appear along the guided path. The second landmark is not a building but Bajer itself, a shallow reservoir averaging 2–7 metres in depth and encircled by a popular walking route. From the 892.5-metre Preradović summit, the panorama takes in Bajer, Lepenica, Fužine and Ličko polje in a single sweep.

Beaches
Lake Lepenica is the clearest swimming choice: it is the municipality’s largest lake, and the local tourist office records summer water temperatures above 23°C. The official visitor map marks a bathing area, beach and boat hire beside Lepenica, whereas Bajer is primarily promoted for walking, boating, canoeing, kayaking and windsurfing. Seasonal waterside venues around Bajer include Čoka, Hunter, Sky 3 and Lagoxperience, making it easy to combine the shoreline with refreshments. Smaller Potkoš is better suited to a picnic and landscape views than to a conventional beach day.

Things to do
Begin with the loop around Lake Bajer, passing the dam, small shore stops and views back towards the village. At the eastern end, continue to Vrelo Cave; its guided visit lasts roughly 25–30 minutes, and the constant 8°C interior calls for an extra layer even in midsummer. Reserve the afternoon for swimming or kayaking on Lepenica. For an elevated view, follow the easier 2.3-kilometre route from Čoka beach bar to Preradović summit, a walk of about 45 minutes. A longer alternative, marked trail 1516, links Vrata with the viewpoint and the Vrelo area.
Food and drink
Fužine’s dining scene centres on a handful of memorable addresses: Hotel Bitoraj in the village centre, Konoba Volta, the Arnika hunting lodge and Furman pizzeria. Bitoraj and Arnika are the natural places to seek the region’s mountain flavours—game, mushrooms, polenta and forest-fruit desserts—while Volta offers the scale and atmosphere of a smaller konoba. Seasonal waterside options include Čoka, Hunter, Sky 3 and Lagoxperience. The tourist office specifically listed Volta and Arnika as closed until early April in spring 2026, so opening arrangements are worth checking when visiting outside the main season.

Practical information
Practical information
Visitor information is provided by the Fužine tourism office, while the official village map also identifies the local clinic, pharmacy, post office, shops and cash machine. Vrelo Cave operates guided entry slots on a seasonal timetable in 2026; an individual adult ticket costs €6.50 outside July and August and €7 during those two months. Tickets are bought at the cave entrance, and the visit takes about half an hour. The interior remains around 8°C, so a jacket is useful even when arriving directly from a summer swim at Lake Lepenica.
Parking
The official system covers seven public car parks: Pod branom, Placa, Kod vrtića, Kod ambulante, Zrinski, Čoka and Franinova sala. Pod branom in the centre has a payment machine as well as mobile parking, while the remaining six use mobile payment according to instructions displayed on site. Traffic arrangements can change during major events beside Bajer; for the 2025 midday New Year celebration, for example, visitors were directed to marked parking outside the centre. For a Vrelo Cave visit, a space towards Bajer’s eastern side makes it practical to complete the final section on foot.
Getting there and around
Fužine has both rail and coach stations, an uncommon practical advantage among smaller Gorski Kotar resorts. The coach stop is in the centre beside the playing field, approximately one kilometre from the railway station. Within the destination, a useful walking network links the main sights: H2 joins Bajer and Lepenica, H3 runs from the centre towards Potkoš, and H4 connects Vrelo Cave with the Roswell cowboy village. The seasonal Fužine Express tourist train also links the centre with the Vrelo area, although its departures depend on the visiting date and weather conditions.
