About
Lokvarka Cave lies on the slopes of Kameniti vrh near Lokve in Gorski kotar. Merchant Jakov Bolf discovered it accidentally in 1911 while limestone was being extracted, and it was adapted for its first visitors the following year. It has been protected as a geomorphological natural monument since 1961. Its explored underground passages extend for 1,179 metres and its known depth is about 275 metres. Visitors descend stairways through the first four galleries to roughly 70 metres below the entrance, where the temperature remains close to 8°C. Sturdy footwear and an extra warm layer make the visit more comfortable.
