Lokve
About this place
Lokve is a Gorski kotar settlement between Delnice, Fužine and the forested slopes of Risnjak, defined by karst caves, Lokvarsko Lake and Golubinjak Forest Park. Lokvarka Cave was discovered during stone extraction in 1911, opened to visitors in 1912 and protected as a geomorphological natural monument in 1961. Visitors can explore the first four of its six known levels, descending 70 metres, while the deepest investigated sections reach approximately 275 metres. Nearby Golubinjak has trails past Paklena vrata, Golubinja and Ledena caves and the giant fir known as the Queen of the Forest. On the other side of the settlement, Lokvarsko Lake occupies the valley of the dammed Lokvarka River, with shores around Homer, Mrzla Vodica and Gorski Raj. The lake is used for swimming and waterside recreation in summer, yet Lokve remains emphatically mountainous: forest trails, cool evenings and the cave’s 8°C temperature call for warmer clothing. Lokve also provides a useful base for Delnice, Fužine and Risnjak National Park, while Restaurant Eva beside the lake connects the scenery with seasonal Gorski kotar cooking.
Lokve belongs culturally and geographically to Gorski kotar despite its administrative position in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and proximity to Kvarner. The settlement lies on the state road between Delnice and Rijeka, with the lake, Lokvarka Cave and Golubinjak distributed around its centre. Karst is not a minor feature here: Lokvarka is a protected geomorphological monument, while planning documents record numerous caves, sinkholes and viewpoints. Beech and fir forests create an unmistakably mountain landscape, and Lokvarsko Lake introduces a broad water surface among the wooded slopes. This combination makes Lokve simultaneously a cave, hiking and lakeside destination.
Things to see
Lokvarka Cave has six levels, 1,179 metres of explored passages and a known depth of approximately 275 metres; its visitor route covers the first four levels. A constant temperature of about 8°C makes a jacket sensible even in midsummer. Golubinjak is a protected forest park containing the Paklena vrata rock passage, Golubinja Cave and the Queen of the Forest, a fir more than 250 years old and roughly 42 metres tall. Lokvarsko Lake is the third major attraction, with an indented shoreline and forested arms best viewed from local roads and designated viewpoints above the water.

Beaches
Lokve’s principal swimming area is on Lokvarsko Lake near Gorski Raj and Lazac, and the municipal road register specifically identifies access to the Gorski Raj bathing area. This is a natural, changeable lakeshore rather than a developed seaside beach; the reservoir level can alter the amount of usable shoreline. Water shoes are helpful on stones, soil and exposed roots, while the mountain lake remains cooler than the nearby Kvarner coast. Swimming should be confined to accessible shore sections, away from the dam, steep banks and occupied fishing positions.
Things to do
Begin with a guided visit to Lokvarka Cave, where the developed route crosses four levels and descends 70 metres. Afterwards continue to Golubinjak Forest Park: a shorter trail leads towards Paklena vrata and Golubinja Cave, while other forest paths pass Ledena and Medvjeđa caves and the Queen of the Forest, an enormous old fir. Reserve the afternoon for the shore of Lokvarsko Lake near Gorski Raj or Homer, combining a walk with swimming when conditions permit or simply a quiet lakeside stop. In both Lokvarka and Golubinjak, remain on marked routes explicitly open to visitors.
Food and drink
Restaurant Eva stands on a hill beside Lokvarsko Lake and builds its menu around seasonal Gorski kotar flavours, making it a natural conclusion to a lakeside walk. Golubinjak Forest Park also has a hospitality venue serving excursion visitors, though its opening should be confirmed outside the main season. Around Lokve and the wider Gorski kotar region, menus may feature game, trout, mushrooms, polenta and forest fruit according to season. Since the number of venues is limited and the lake, village centre and Golubinjak are separated, booking a table in advance is sensible.

Practical information
Practical information
Bring closed footwear and a warm layer for Lokvarka Cave: the underground temperature is about 8°C and the tour includes numerous steps to a depth of 70 metres. Current guided-tour times should be checked with Lokvarka, the company responsible for cave visits and Golubinjak facilities. Remain on marked forest trails because several caves along the wider route are undeveloped and suitable only for properly equipped speleologists. Mobile coverage can weaken beside the lake and inside karst depressions, so save the route map before leaving central Lokve.
Parking
Parking at Lokve’s attractions is separated by site: Lokvarka Cave is approached from Šetalište Golubinjak, the forest park has its own entrance area, and a registered local road leads to the Gorski Raj bathing spot. Visitors should not expect a continuous developed car park along the lake; vehicles belong on established pull-offs and designated surfaces without blocking forest or emergency access. For Lokvarka and Golubinjak, current entry and parking arrangements should be confirmed with the operator before arrival, particularly on weekends and during the summer excursion season.
Getting there and around
Lokve lies on the D3 state road between Delnice and Rijeka and close to the A6 Zagreb–Rijeka motorway; Lokvarka Cave is about two kilometres east of the village centre. The settlement has a station on the Gorski kotar railway, but the lake, Golubinjak and the cave entrance are separated, making a car the most practical way to combine them. Reaching individual attractions from the station involves walking on local roads without frequent urban transport. In winter, snow and ice in Gorski kotar can significantly extend driving times to Lokve.
