About
Risnjak National Park lies in northwestern Gorski kotar, where limestone ridges rise above dense forest. At 1,528 metres, Veliki Risnjak is the park’s highest peak. Its original protected core was designated in 1953; in 1997 the park expanded to include Snježnik and the source of the Kupa River. Beech, fir and spruce cover much of the massif, a defining feature of this wet karst landscape. Large carnivores including lynx, wolf and brown bear occur here. Visitors may use only marked routes; admission is valid for two days, and official entrances include Crni Lug and Hrvatsko.
