Gomirje
About this place
Gomirje is an inland settlement in the eastern Gorski kotar area administered by the Town of Vrbovsko, despite the destination data incorrectly classifying it as coastal. The village name appears in the Modruš land register of 1486, while its defining heritage site is the Orthodox Monastery and Church of St John the Forerunner at Ribnjak. Monastic life here is traditionally dated to 1600, when the first wooden complex was built; the present masonry church followed between 1719 and 1722. A Frankopan watchtower erected beside the monastery in 1621 was later adapted as a bell tower, and the complex assumed its present appearance after an 1889 rebuilding. Local tourism material describes Gomirje as Europe’s westernmost Orthodox monastery. The Feast of the Dormition, observed here on 28 August, draws worshippers and visitors to the village. Gomirje also has a railway stop on the Gorski kotar route; HŽPP’s 2025/26 timetable remains in force until 12 December 2026, but individual connections should be checked by date.
Gomirje is one of the 65 settlements administered by Vrbovsko and belongs historically to eastern Gorski kotar rather than the Kvarner coast. It appears in the Modruš land register of 1486, placing the village firmly within the region’s Frankopan-era history. Its strongest marker of identity is the Monastery of St John the Forerunner, whose foundation is associated with the year 1600. The present church was built from 1719 to 1722 beside a residence containing twelve monastic cells and a refectory; the residence’s eastern wing was completed in 1758. The Dormition feast on 28 August remains the monastery calendar’s central annual date.

Things to do
Centre a Gomirje visit on the monastery complex at Ribnjak 23, where the Church of St John the Forerunner adjoins a three-wing, two-level monastic residence. Outside, look for the relationship between the nave and the bell tower occupying the site of a Frankopan watchtower built in 1621. Arrange interior access through the monastery contact published by the Vrbovsko tourist office, since this is an active religious house rather than a conventional museum. Afterwards, walk through rural Gomirje and combine the stop with Vrbovsko, identified in local visitor material as roughly five kilometres away.
