About
Gomirje Monastery stands in the Gorski kotar village of the same name, near Vrbovsko, and is dedicated to the Nativity of St John the Baptist. It was founded in 1599/1600, during the settlement of Orthodox Vlachs from the Korenica area; its earliest monastery and church buildings were wooden. In 1621 Vuk Krsto Frankapan built a watchtower beside the monastery. The tower was converted into a bell tower in 1719, and a church was subsequently added beside it and consecrated in 1730. The complex offers a focused stop for visitors interested in the Orthodox heritage of Gorski kotar and the Frankopan frontier past. It is in Gomirje, about five kilometres from Vrbovsko.
