Tvrđavica
About this place
Tvrđavica is an Osijek settlement on the left bank of the Drava, opposite the inner city, and should not be confused with Tvrđa, the Baroque fortress district on the right bank. Its principal visitor landmark is Osijek Zoo at Tvrđavica 1, founded on this site in 1955. The zoo describes itself as Croatia’s largest, while its extensive riverside greenery gives this part of Osijek a markedly different character from Tvrđa’s museums, squares and Baroque façades. Reaching Tvrđavica can become part of the experience: the traditional river ferry known as the kompa crosses between the Upper Town and the landing near the zoo, while the pedestrian bridge offers a car-free route to the left bank. Ferry operation remains dependent on river conditions; service was temporarily suspended on 14 June 2026 because navigation was unsafe, and low water also affected a September programme. Tvrđavica consequently works best as the green extension of an Osijek riverside walk, with the zoo and left-bank paths followed by an easy return towards the urban attractions across the Drava.
The Drava shapes Tvrđavica more strongly than a conventional city street plan. The settlement occupies the left bank, with Osijek’s Upper Town and the historic Tvrđa district across the river; despite their similar names, Tvrđavica and Tvrđa are not the same place. Tvrđavica’s best-known address is Osijek Zoo, founded here in 1955 and still occupying its original district seven decades later. The ferry crossing has a history of its own: transport between the Upper Town and Tvrđavica began on 13 October 1918, and the first Osijek ferry was named “Osijek”. This combination of river crossing, greenery and animal enclosures gives Tvrđavica an identity quite distinct from Tvrđa’s museums and Baroque architecture.

Things to do
A Tvrđavica visit naturally begins at Osijek Zoo, whose 2026 public-feeding programme varies by month and weekday; Friday sessions, for example, include meerkats, a crocodile, alpacas and a chimpanzee. From the zoo, continue on foot along the left bank of the Drava and make the return to central Osijek a circular walk across the pedestrian bridge. When river conditions permit, the kompa ferry offers an alternative crossing from its landing beside the zoo to the Upper Town. For a cultural continuation, cross to the right bank and head towards Tvrđa, home to the Museum of Slavonia and Archaeological Museum; these institutions are not in Tvrđavica and should be treated as a separate part of the city itinerary.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Tvrđavica’s most distinctive public connection is the kompa ferry between the Upper Town and the landing beside Osijek Zoo. The Osijek tourist board describes the crossing as free and operating at set intervals, but service depends directly on conditions on the Drava; unsafe navigation caused a temporary suspension on 14 June 2026. Pedestrians and cyclists can instead use the renovated pedestrian bridge, reopened in 2023, linking a zoo visit with the Promenada and central Osijek. Tvrđavica belongs to the first fare zone of Osijek’s public-transport system together with Osijek and Podravlje, while road access uses the city’s Drava bridges. Anyone planning to use the ferry should check the zoo’s navigation notice on the day of travel.
