About
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and its Franciscan convent stand in Osijek’s Tvrđa on a site occupied by the Suleiman Khan Mosque during the Ottoman period. Franciscans arrived in Osijek after the city’s liberation in 1687, and the present Baroque church was built in 1708 and 1709. Its high altar was made in 1726 by the Osijek master Ivan Dill, while the adjoining convent developed in stages. The new convent was built from 1733, completed in 1761, and linked to the older wing by vaulted arches. The complex was badly damaged during the Croatian War of Independence, including its roof and parts of the interior, an important chapter in its more recent history.
