About

Osijek’s Tvrđa grew on a strategic site beside the Drava, over an earlier medieval and Ottoman settlement. After the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699, it became an important component of the Habsburg Monarchy’s defensive system and the administrative centre of the Slavonian Generalate. Its planned Baroque layout brings military, civic and sacred buildings together: administrative and military structures surround the central square, while Jesuit and Franciscan complexes are also integral to the ensemble. UNESCO placed the historic town-planning ensemble on its Tentative List in 2005; this is not an inscription on the World Heritage List. The basic urban matrix and parts of the fortification remain, while restoration continues.
