Church of Saint Michael

church in Osijek, Croatia

About

The Church of St Michael the Archangel stands on Juraj Križanić Square in Tvrđa and is instantly recognisable for its broad Baroque façade and two 47-metre towers. The Jesuits built it from 1725 to 1748 on a site associated with the former Kasim Pasha Mosque. Its interior contains seven altars, including the high altar dedicated to St Michael, flanked by statues of Saints Peter and Paul and the Jesuit saints Ignatius of Loyola and Francis Xavier. The church also holds Fischer’s 1830 organ, restored between 2021 and 2026. It is a particularly worthwhile stop for anyone exploring Tvrđa’s Baroque townscape and sacred art.
