Novigrad Podravski
About this place
Novigrad Podravski sits beneath the Bilogora foothills, 17 kilometres southeast of Koprivnica, on the road and railway corridor running through the Drava valley towards Virje and Đurđevac. Behind its present name lies medieval Komarnica, once the seat of an archdeaconry and county and first recorded in 1201. Ottoman incursions emptied the earlier settlement; a defensive fort appeared here in the late 16th century, and the rebuilt village acquired the name Novigrad early in the following century. Its principal historic landmark is the Parish Church of the Parting of the Holy Apostles, erected in 1830 after the parish had been restored in 1654. The village also retains an important Military Frontier association: from the first half of the 18th century, Novigrad Podravski served as a company headquarters. A visit works well as a compact walk from the church through the centre and onwards towards Bilogora’s lower slopes. The stop on the Koprivnica–Virovitica railway makes a car-free day trip possible, although HŽPP engineering notices and replacement-bus arrangements should be checked before departure.
Novigrad Podravski draws its identity from Bilogora, the Drava-valley transport corridor and the legacy of old Komarnica. The medieval settlement was an ecclesiastical and administrative centre, while its later fort belonged to the defensive system facing the Ottoman frontier. Re-established Novigrad subsequently became a Military Frontier company headquarters and gained its own municipality in 1871. Rather than possessing a dense historic quarter, today’s village stretches along the route between Koprivnica and Đurđevac, with the Parish Church of the Parting of the Holy Apostles providing its clearest architectural focal point. Its position 17 kilometres from Koprivnica makes it easy to combine with the county seat, while the nearby Bilogora slopes give Novigrad a distinctive setting where the level Drava plain begins to meet rolling countryside.

Things to do
Begin at the 1830 Church of the Parting of the Holy Apostles, Novigrad Podravski’s most recognisable historic building. Continue through the village centre, reading its elongated layout against the old Drava-valley route that linked Koprivnica, Virje and Đurđevac. To understand the deeper history beneath the modern streets, remember that medieval Komarnica stood in this area: it was documented in 1201 and associated with several churches. Finish near the edge of the settlement and the lower Bilogora slopes, where the transition from the flat Drava plain to rolling terrain becomes most apparent. Travellers arriving by rail can turn this sequence into a straightforward walking circuit from the Novigrad Podravski stop, without needing local transport between the principal points.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Novigrad Podravski lies on the Koprivnica–Virovitica railway, between Bregi and Virje, making the train the clearest alternative to driving. HŽPP timetables for the Drava-valley route include calls at Novigrad Podravski, although the number of services varies by operating day and timetable period. Road access follows the Podravina main road, with the municipal centre approximately 17 kilometres from Koprivnica. During engineering works between Koprivnica and Kloštar in October 2026, HŽPP scheduled replacement buses for certain daytime trains and designated a stop beside Novigrad Podravski’s kindergarten. Similar temporary changes make it important to consult current HŽPP notices shortly before travelling, particularly when connecting at Koprivnica or continuing towards Đurđevac and Virovitica.
