About
Đurđevac Old Town is a medieval fortress whose construction began in the 14th century and continued through later additions. Marshland once formed a natural defensive belt around it, making it a Wasserburg, or water castle. Its irregular polygonal plan, 16th-century keep, and ramparts with round corner towers still convey its military purpose. The fortress became particularly important during Ottoman incursions, especially after Virovitica fell in 1552. Once its defensive role had ended, the building served a variety of purposes. It now houses the Town Museum of Đurđevac, including part of the Ivan Lacković Croata donation displayed in the fortress attic.
