About
The present Church of St George in central Đurđevac was built in 1928–29 to plans by Zagreb architect Stjepan Podhorsky. It was needed because earlier churches, erected on marshy ground, had gradually become unsafe. The remodelled Baroque tower from the 1774 masonry church was retained, creating a striking link between two building campaigns. St George was restored as the parish’s patron on 16 July 1824, while the parish itself is first recorded in 1334. Podhorsky’s design is an important example of Croatian sacred architecture from the first half of the 20th century; look for the contrast between the older tower and the later church body.
