Virovitica
About this place
Virovitica is a historic trading centre between the flatlands of Podravina and the northern foothills of Bilogora, with city life focused on Pejačević Castle. The present Late Baroque-Neoclassical residence was built from 1800 to 1804 on the site of a medieval stronghold and now houses the City Museum, founded in 1953. The restored complex is more than a museum backdrop: bridges spanning the former moat, the landscaped park and pedestrian links to the main squares make it the ideal starting point for exploring Virovitica. The museum’s “Wooden Age” display connects the region with timber, crafts and everyday life, while “History of the Town and Castle” traces the transformation from fortress to estate and civic centre. A short walk away, the Franciscan Church of St Roch and its monastery preserve another major layer of local heritage. South of the centre, vineyards climb Bilogora, while the Virovitica fishponds offer a four-kilometre nature trail only a few kilometres from town.
Virovitica is defined by the meeting of an old market town, an aristocratic residence and the green foothills of Bilogora. Pejačević Castle dominates the centre, built between 1800 and 1804 on the site of a demolished medieval fortress; its moat and park still shape the surrounding walks. Written records from the 13th century use names such as Wereuce and Veruche, while the figure of Mercury on the former First Croatian Savings Bank recalls the town’s commercial past. Inside the castle, the City Museum interprets archaeological, ethnographic and cultural material from the Virovitica area. Just south of the urban core, vineyards and Bilogora’s excursion grounds begin, extending the city’s identity into a landscape of fishponds, woodland and the Virovitički vidici wine route.
Things to see
Pejačević Castle is Virovitica’s defining landmark: Count Antun Pejačević began building it on the site of a medieval fort, with construction lasting from 1800 to 1804. Since 2019, its City Museum has presented renewed permanent exhibitions incorporating more than 1,500 objects and multimedia features. Around the castle are the Bridge of Love, Mirror Bridge, Grammar School Bridge, Portal Bridge and Musical Bridge, which produces sounds as visitors walk across it. The Franciscan monastery and parish Church of St Roch form the city’s other major heritage ensemble, with links to Virovitica’s history and the Pejačević family. The former First Croatian Savings Bank is easily recognised by the figure of Mercury, the Roman god of trade, on its façade.

Things to do
Begin in Virovitica’s Pejačević Castle, where the City Museum introduces the town through collections displayed inside its defining landmark. From the restored castle grounds, continue to the Franciscan complex and the Church of St Roch. The monastery’s heritage includes a sacred-art museum and a library with material spanning the 15th to the 21st century. Returning to Ban Josip Jelačić Square creates a compact circuit through Virovitica’s historic centre rather than a series of disconnected stops. If visiting on a Sunday, note that the City Museum accepts only pre-arranged groups, so the castle grounds and Franciscan ensemble become the practical core of an independent walk.
Food and drink
For a meal within Virovitica, the county tourist board lists Flora on Matije Gupca Street, M.F.M. on Ferde Rusana Street, Luka on Vukovarska Street and Šulentić in the Milanovac district. Pizzerias 4M and Šećer suit a quicker stop, while Chocolate Cafe and Kavana Medena sit by Ban Josip Jelačić Square, close to Pejačević Castle. The county destination-management plan also records Tricolore, Franjo Dvojak’s wine-tasting venue and the Harmund distillery among Virovitica’s food-and-drink businesses. Their locations make it straightforward to combine lunch, dessert or a local tasting with a walk through the castle-centred historic core.
