Drnje
About this place
Drnje is a Podravina village and municipal centre, eight kilometres northeast of Koprivnica, set at 127 metres beside the Gliboki stream, a Drava tributary, opposite Botovo. Its centre is marked by the 19th-century Parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The village’s transport identity was shaped by the Rijeka–Zagreb–Koprivnica–Drnje–Botovo–Zákány–Budapest railway; this section opened in 1870, when Drnje station was built. Drnjanska Podravina brings together Drnje, Botovo and Torčec at the Croatian–Hungarian borderland. The Koprivnica–Drnje–Gola road leads to the international crossing opened in 1982, while the regional road via Đelekovec and Torčec links Međimurje with Sigetec, Hlebine and Novigrad Podravski. Drnje parish is recorded in 1334 and was transferred from Torčec to the present village in 1501. In the 2025/2026 timetable, some trains previously terminating or starting in Koprivnica were extended to Novo Drnje. The newly built Novo Drnje station forms part of the Križevci–Koprivnica–state border upgrade.
Drnje’s identity was shaped by the Drava, its position near Hungary and the railway opened here in 1870. The village is the administrative centre of a municipality that also includes Botovo and Torčec, while nearby Koprivnica remains the main focus of everyday travel. The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary evokes the former Military Frontier: the 1845–1846 building has a tower above its façade, a rounded sanctuary and a Baroque statue inherited from its predecessor. Drnje’s written heritage is represented by the Drnje Songbook, a manuscript largely compiled by 1687 and now preserved in the manuscript collection of the National and University Library in Zagreb.

Things to do
Begin at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Crkvena Street, where the restrained Classical façade and tall bell tower frame an interior containing a Marian statue from 1739. Continue from central Drnje to Šoderica, an artificial lake of roughly 195 hectares formed by gravel and sand extraction. Its landscaped northern shore, surfaced with gravel and accompanied by lawns and playgrounds, is the appropriate part of the lake for swimming and a waterside break. View the quieter north-eastern corner from the bank: separated by an embankment and edged with reeds, it contains Šoderica’s most ecologically interesting surviving habitat.
