Peteranec
About this place
Peteranec is a Podravina village east of Koprivnica, shaped by its Military Frontier past, Kajkavian literature and the sculptural legacy of Ivan Sabolić. A medieval church dedicated to St Peter and the settlement itself appear in a 1267 charter issued by King Béla IV, while the present Church of St Peter and St Paul was completed around 1773. The former Captaincy building, erected around 1775, now houses municipal offices and the Ivan Sabolić Sculpture Gallery, opened in 1983 from the artist’s donation. Outside stand Sabolić’s “Winter Sun,” containing his ashes since 1987, and his 1954 bust of poet Fran Galović. Galović was born in Peteranec in 1887, and a local association marks his Kajkavian cycle through programmes named Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Nearby Sigetec is also remembered as a filming location for the television series “Gruntovčani,” first broadcast in 1975. The new Peteranec railway stop between Koprivnica and Novo Drnje now makes the village accessible without a car.
Peteranec held an unusually important role within the Military Frontier during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Captaincy building, dating from about 1775, recalls the period when the village served as a company headquarters, educational centre and later a district seat for eastern Koprivnica Podravina. Its modern cultural identity is closely associated with writer Fran Galović, born here in 1887, and sculptor Ivan Sabolić, born in 1921. Galović’s Kajkavian writing anchors Peteranec in the speech and landscape of Podravina, while the Sabolić gallery inside the Captaincy preserves sculptures, drawings, sketches, studies and models from the artist’s donation. The 1773 Church of St Peter and St Paul forms the village’s other principal historical landmark.

Things to do
Begin in the old Captaincy, where the Ivan Sabolić Sculpture Gallery occupies an 18th-century building. Outside, examine “Winter Sun,” the sculpture that has held Sabolić’s ashes since 1987, and his 1954 bust of Peteranec-born poet Fran Galović. Continue to the late-Baroque Church of St Peter and St Paul from 1773, noted for its stone portal and freestanding baptismal font. Nearby Sigetec preserves the rural setting associated with the filming of all ten episodes of the television series “Gruntovčani.” A Peteranec itinerary can also include Galovićev dom, where programmes inspired by the poet’s “Z mojih bregov” cycle sustain his Kajkavian legacy.
