Cernik
About this place
Cernik adjoins Nova Gradiška, yet its layered history and position beneath Mount Psunj give it a distinct identity. The centre is marked by a former lowland fortress later reshaped as the Baroque Kulmer Castle, while the Franciscan monastery and St Peter’s Church stand only a few minutes away on foot. Inside the monastic complex are seven Baroque altars, a library of roughly 7,000 volumes, and an archaeological and palaeontological collection devoted to biblical history. A philosophy school opened here in 1757, leaving an important trace of eighteenth-century learning in Slavonia. From the village centre, visitors can continue to St Leonard’s Church, about two kilometres away, or head towards Lake Orašje, the Bačica dam and the wooded slopes of Psunj. The surrounding hills also preserve remains of the medieval forts of Šag, Gračanica and Podvrški, making Cernik suitable for combining a compact heritage walk with time outdoors. Its most unusual food tradition is ćupteti, small baked pieces of dough filled with seasoned sausage meat and associated with the local pig-slaughter season.
Cernik developed beside the Šumetlica and Bačica streams, where the Nova Gradiška plain begins to rise towards Mount Psunj. Frankopanska Street links the village with Nova Gradiška, while Požeška and Đurićeva streets lead into the hillier part of the municipality. Its former fortress guarded the approach to Požega and was transformed into a Baroque residence after the Ottoman period; the resulting castle still defines the village centre. A second landmark ensemble is formed by the Franciscan monastery and St Peter’s Church, both created during the eighteenth century. This combination of castle, monastery, vineyards and the forests of Psunj sets Cernik apart from nearby urban Nova Gradiška.

Things to do
Begin at Kulmer Castle, then walk a few minutes to the Franciscan monastery and St Peter’s Church. The church contains seven Baroque altars, while the monastery houses a historic library, a contemporary-art gallery and a collection connected with the Holy Land; group visits should be arranged with the friars. From the centre, continue roughly two kilometres to the restored Church of St Leonard and its nearby spring. A longer outing can follow paths towards the remains of Šag, Gračanica or Podvrški forts, while the landscape around Lake Orašje and the Bačica dam offers a quieter conclusion for visitors interested in fishing and waterside scenery.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Cernik is directly connected by road with Nova Gradiška, with Frankopanska Street continuing towards the town. Travellers arriving by rail therefore use Nova Gradiška station and complete the journey by local road transport. Within Cernik, Požeška Street begins near the bridge over the Šumetlica, while Đurićeva Street follows the Bačica stream northwards. A car or bicycle is more practical for reaching St Leonard’s Church, Lake Orašje, the Bačica dam and sites on the Psunj slopes. Kulmer Castle and the Franciscan monastery, however, stand close enough together for the central heritage route to be completed entirely on foot.
