About
Stara Gradiška operated in the buildings of an existing prison. The Ustaša began bringing prisoners there in late 1941, and the camp was formally established in 1942. It was the second-largest camp in the Jasenovac camp system and included men’s, women’s, and children’s sections. Those imprisoned there included persecuted groups as well as people detained on political grounds, including communists, supporters of the National Liberation Movement, and members of their families. The site forms part of the Jasenovac Memorial Site, which identifies it as Camp V. A visit should be approached as a memorial experience: it is a place to learn about history and pay respect to the victims in a quiet, dignified manner.
