About
Cernik Castle reflects the layered history of a settlement recorded in written sources as early as the Middle Ages. After the Slavonian Military Frontier was established in 1747, the older fortress was reshaped as a Baroque castle, integrating a defensive structure into the peacetime fabric of the village. Research on the building focuses especially on the relationship between its pre-Ottoman remains and later Baroque alterations, making it more than a handsome historic façade. It stands in Cernik near the Franciscan monastery and is a rewarding stop for visitors interested in reading a settlement’s past through its surviving architecture.
