Trsat Castle occupies a strategic hilltop 138 metres above Rijeka. The site served as a lookout from prehistoric and Roman times, while the medieval fortress is first documented in 1288. Its present appearance owes partly to Count Laval Nugent, who reshaped the complex in the nineteenth century and used it as a family mausoleum. The plateau opens broad views across Rijeka, Kvarner Bay and traces of older defensive routes. Visitors can reach the castle by bus through Trsat or climb the historic Trsat Steps from the city centre. Today the walls contain exhibition and interpretation spaces, while the courtyard and terraces also host open-air cultural events, combining a major viewpoint with one of the city's oldest fortified sites.
